Responding To The End Of Economic Growth

August 10, 2016

Both the Democratic and Republican parties promise Americans more and better jobs, a vibrant economy. But what if this is truly a dreaming field, which no one can build? The time has come to consider a fundamental change in what we aspire to.

US Continues to Ignore Massive Pedophilia in Afghanistan

August 02, 2016

“In an Afghanistan ravaged by war and poverty, an ancient tradition has been secretly revived: Young boys sold by their families to wealthy merchants and warlords, taught to dance and entertain, and used for sex.”

Effective Assimilation Can Thwart Authoritarianism

July 27, 2016

Both Haidt and Brooks may well be right that immigration is a very significant factor in the current reaction of the nationalists to the liberal policies favored by globalists; however, it is far from the only one. Two other major factors are involved: the march of individual rights, and the growing community deficit.

A Semi-Permanent State Of Quasi-War?

July 15, 2016

Many Americans, and surely many people around the world, will be shocked to learn about the kinds of foreign policy “architecture” the President plans to leave for his successor.

Protecting Civilians: Response to Hajjar

June 14, 2016

Lisa Hajjar has positioned an op-ed I wrote as a next step in a multifaceted Israeli campaign to bring “its violence into the law.” In response, I first outline the motivation for the op-ed, and then try to address what I see as the underlying issue, and how it might be addressed.

Killer robots won’t doom humanity–but our fears of AI might

May 24, 2016

Just how worried should we be about killer robots? To go by the opinions of a highly regarded group of scholars, including Stephen Hawking, Max Tegmark, Franz Wilczek, and Stuart Russell, we should be wary of the prospect of artificial intelligence rebelling against its makers.

Community and Economy

May 03, 2016

Community and economy are two distinct realms of social life. In communities, we largely deal with one another as persons. We value people not only in their own right, but also as neighbors, friends, and those with whom we share a concern for the common good.

The Court May Curb Legalized Bribery

April 27, 2016

Today the Supreme Court begins hearing the case brought against former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell for 11 counts of conspiracy to commit fraud. The case deserves much more attention than it has received so far, because it provides an opportunity for the Court to limit the harm it caused by Citizens United. It could correct what amounts to legalized bribery by ruling that you may give all you wish — but not get any material benefits in return.

Obama’s Inner Priority ‘Jammed’ by the Pentagon

March 26, 2016

For Obama, Asia represents the future; it deserves far more U.S. attention than it receives, writes Jeffrey Goldberg in a much-cited article. But the president found himself stuck in the Middle East.

Congress must act soon to stop Apple

March 18, 2016

If Congress does not act soon to rule that the CALEA act applies to extremely strong encryption inserted into Apple phones, every terrorist, drug dealer, and human trafficker with half a brain will get one.

Apple’s Chinese Red Herrings

March 17, 2016

Far from yielding to the FBI’s call to help it gain access to messages stored in a terrorist’s cell phone, Apple is doubling down: Apple is working to increase its iCloud encryption, which would inhibit even Apple itself from retrieving password-protected customer data stored in its cloud.

Donald Trump

China’s Role in the US Presidential Campaign

March 10, 2016

The major candidates vying to become the next president of the United States in the current election campaign have hitherto paid much less attention to China as a military power – and much more to its economic prowess (and humanitarian deficits).

Apple: Profit to Trump National Security

February 29, 2016

There are reasons to believe that ISIS has acquired this material, which it needs to make a dirty bomb. I wonder what Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, and all those who cheer him on, would say when this bomb is set off in a major American city -- and a major reason the FBI was prevented from stopping the attack is that Apple provided the terrorists with a completely secure communication tool.

The Selective Skepticism of Salon's Ben Norton

February 23, 2016

(Written by: Gidon Shaviv) In a factually challenged piece in Salon, Ben Norton displays a dazzling skepticism of information from Israeli sources alongside a great acceptance of unfounded anti-Israel conspiracy theories.
